High Demand for Bass Guitar Players

June 26, 2009

This is part 3 in our “Why Play the Bass Guitar?” series.

Bands are always looking for bass guitar players since they aren’t as common as guitarists. Even if you are beginner you can probably find a spot in a local band without too much trouble.

Check out Craigslist and look at how many guitarists are wanted vs bassists. If it’s your goal to play in a band, bass guitar can put you on the fast track. Not only will you get stage experience, your skills will improve faster when playing in a band situation with other musicians vs playing alone in your basement.

Bass guitarists are also always needed for session work and providing music for background tracks. Try posting an ad on Craigslist offering your services. I think you’ll be surprised at how many people are desperate to find a bass player for this type of recording work.

That’s it for our short 3 part series. You’re seen how the bass guitar is so versatile, anyone can learn to play. If you already have guitar playing experience it’s even easier to start playing. And even better, bass players are always in demand so there will never be a shortage of bands looking for your skills no matter what level your playing is at.

Hope you enjoyed the series and until next time, keep rocking!

Switching to the Bass Guitar

June 24, 2009

This is part 2 in our “Why Play the Bass Guitar?” series.

So you’ve been playing the guitar for a while but not at the skill level you’d like? Here’s some great news!

The strings on a bass guitar are the same tuning as the bottom four strings on a regular guitar. You’ve got two less strings to worry about and you probably already know most of the notes on the bass fretboard.

Also since individual notes are mainly played on the bass, there’s no more tricky chord shapes to learn or complex strumming patterns to figure out.

This makes it extremely easy for any guitar player to pick up the bass and start playing right away. Also a lot of the accessories you already have will likely work with a bass as well. Some effects pedals, picks, straps, tuners and more will work with your new bass guitar.

Switching to the bass doesn’t mean abandoning the guitar all-together. Instead you will be adding a new weapon to your musical arsenal. Why play just one instrument, when you can play two?

In part 3 we will talk about the huge need and demand for bass guitar players.

Versatility of the Bass Guitar

June 22, 2009

This is part 1 in our “Why Play the Bass Guitar?” series.

Did you know that the bass guitar is one of the easiest instruments to begin playing? Even more so for guitar players as you’ll see in a minute.

The bass can be heard in all different kinds of music. Everything from funk, to metal, to classical, to rock music. This means you can get started no matter what your musical taste or background.

Also, because the bass guitar is used from playing everything from simple grooves to killer solos, you can play at a stage performance level while still being a relative beginner.

As you can see, the bass guitar is a great instrument to learn to play that will provide you with many musical options. In part 2 we will talk about switching to the bass if you are already a guitar player.

How Many Strings do I Need on my Bass?

April 23, 2009

A regular bass guitar will have 4 strings tuned to E-A-D-G. 5 and 6 string basses are also available. The extra strings enable one to play a wider range of notes. A 4 string bass is recommended for beginners and is usually what’s included in a bass guitar package.

Acoustic Bass Guitar

April 23, 2009

A less common type of bass guitar is the acoustic bass. These are similar to an acoustic guitar and are hollow with a sound hole. No amplifier is required to hear the sound. Acoustic bass guitars are more of a specialty item and usually sold by themselves and not in a package with anything else. An acoustic bass can make a great second instrument after you’ve been playing for a while.

Solid Body Bass Guitar

April 23, 2009

The most common type of bass included in a package is a regular electric bass guitar. An electric bass guitar will have a solid body and require an amplifier in order to hear the sound. The bass amplifier will be included in the package along with a cord to connect the two together so you can start rocking!
